Thought for July 2008 CAUTION! Avoid FAR-itis. This deadly disease occurs when any pilot accepts the Federal Aviation Regualtions as the gold standard for flight safety. Sure as pilots we all need to know, understand and follow the FAR/AIM. But that is merely the baseline, the absolute minimum standard and a long way from the gold standard. For example the FAR tells us that you are a legally competant instrument pilot if you merely fly six approaches and one or two holds every six months ON A SIMULATOR. Do you really think that assures proficiency? One sad story was recently reported by the AOPA of a man who thought that he was be perfectly safe and following the rules to a "T" by flying tree top level over unoccupied terrain because the FAR allows such flight. He killed his passenger when he struck an unexpected set of power lines. Oops! He forgot about FAR section 91.13, but the FAA didn't. Learn the rules, follow the rules, and then learn how far beyond the rules you need to go to be truly safe and proficient.
